Metaphysics sounds complicated, but it does not have to be. It allows you to know what is really going on. Metaphysical Philosophy is a traditional branch of philosophy concerned with explaining the fundamental nature of 'being' and the cosmos that encompasses it. We therefore have a framework to answer these questions. “What’s out there? Who am I? What’s it all about? How do I fit in? How should I live my life? How can I get through crisis?”
These seemingly imponderable questions do have answers when looked at from the vantage point of being a pilgrim on the journey of the soul. Often, we first need to understand how and why we interpret ‘reality’ and ‘consciousness’. Then we go one step further and reveal the purpose of living and dying.
"Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart.
Who looks outside, dreams.
Who looks inside, awakens."
- Carl Jung
Spiritual Philosophy puts us directly in touch with the ‘mystical’ heat originally at the heart of each of the spiritual movements and religions, and shows us what wholeness is. Spiritual Philosophy opens us up to connecting with the fire of our own intuition; with The Ground of Being, with Perennial Wisdom and most importantly with our souls.
Spiritual Philosophy is distinct from Spiritual or Religious Practice, which are the practices designed to lead us back to wholeness through routine – such as yoga or devotion in Church, Mosque or Synagogue.
We strive together to develop a subjective relationship to reality.
Objective reality is discovered to be unreliable - based as it is on the rational mind, which changes frequently, as we well know; objective reality is also based on hard science, which shifts with the years and centuries; and on the wisdom of those trained to ignore personal experience. Objective reality is also most often deduced only through unseen filters placed by centuries of history, bigotry, speculation and conjecture. We learn that the current way we perceive reality is largely mediated by our 'less-than-reliable' senses and through the filters of our understanding of History, the undying legacy of Myth and Legend, the interpretations and instructions of Religions and Spiritual Movements, the speculations of Philosophy and Psychology, the interpretations of Law, and so on. All these ‘realities’ we examine in some depth, and then, once deconstructed, we put back together again in a way that can help us ‘see’ more clearly and ‘respond’ and ‘act’ more appropriately.
Subjective Reality is the precious alternative; it both acknowledges and honours the intention and purpose of these unseen filters, and also goes beyond them to achieve our own interpretation of reality – subjective reality. We learn to ‘read’ ourselves subjectively, and learn to honour and rely on what we find; and knowing that insight and guidance so gathered is ‘soul-sourced’ and impeccable, is one of the goals and achievements of this course. Even our intuition, insight and emotions, long decried as unstable indicators, are seen to be important carriers of soul-generated messages for the conscious mind. Most importantly, through an examination of our psyche, we learn to discriminate between the needy ego-inspired self and the caring soul-sourced self!
